WHAT IS LARIMAR?

Larimar, also known as "Atlantis Stone" or "Dolphin Stone" is a rare blue variety of pectolite that has only been found in the Dominican Republic. Larimar is formed through a combination of volcanic and hydrothermal processes. The first stage of formation begins with volcanic activity where molten rock (magma) rises towards the Earths surface. The magma contains a variety of different minerals and gases. During a volcanic eruption, magma reaches the surface, rapidly cooling and solidifying into igneous rock. Inside the igneous rock, Larimar begins to form from a result of this interaction between hot magma and hydrothermal fluids. The hydrothermal fluids contain elements and minerals that dissolve in high temperatures and pressure.

The presence of water within the magma chamber allows the hydrothermal fluids to circulate and interact with the surrounding rock. Over time, the fluids deposit minerals, including pectolite, which is the main component of larimar. Larimars unique blue colouration is attributed to the presence of copper impurities within the mineral. These impurities give larimar a vast range of blue hues, from light blue to deep blue-green.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF LARIMAR?

Larimar is believed to possess powerful metaphysical properties, making it a sought-after stone for spiritual and emotional healing. It is associated with tranquillity, soothing energy and the element of water. It is also believed to reduce stress and help keep your mind in a calm state.

Activating the throat chakra, Larimar is great at increasing your communication and encourages confidence to bring any issues to light. By placing a piece of Larimar within your home or workspace, it is said to ensure a pleasant and serene atmosphere.

WHERE IS LARIMAR FOUND?

Larimar is only found primarily in one place in the world, which is the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. It was in 1974 that it was first discovered for mining and marketing, although the residents of the Dominican Republic and their ancestors were long aware of the stone. The first mention of the stone Larimar or "Travelina" which was the name at the time, was in a request to mine in 1916 which was denied. It wasn't until 1974 when it was re-discovered that Larimar started to become mined and marketed. Miguel Méndez of the Dominican Republic and Peace Corps Volunteer Norman Rilling rediscovered Larimar on a beach foot of the Bahoruco Mountain Range, the coastal province of Barahona. Méndez renamed Travelina after his young daughters name "Larissa" and "Mar" meaning sea in Spanish.

HOW TO CARE FOR LARIMAR

Taking care of Larimar is an important step in maintaining its colour and integrity. Larimar is sensitive to direct sunlight and heat. If proper care isn't taken this can cause fading to your precious gemstone. To keep your Larimar looking its best, be sure to keep it away from intense sunlight to help preserve its beautiful colouring.

HOW TO CLEANSE LARIMAR

Larimar is a 4.5 - 5 on the MOHS Hardness Scale and is hard enough to water cleanse although it is on the verge on being too soft for this method. It is said to be safe to run quickly under tap water, however I personally still wouldn't recommend this, as Larimar is relatively expensive, rare and just not worth taking the risk and ruining your precious stone. Larimar can be cleansed safely through other methods including incense smoke, other crystals and sound to name a few.
