WHAT IS CITRINE?

Citrine is a variety of Quartz, typically a transparent, pale yellow to brownish orange colour. Its distinctive yellow colour is caused by iron impurities within the crystal as its formed. Citrine is named after the French word “Citron” which means lemon, due to its lemon-yellow hues. 


A popular gemstone, Citrine is commonly used in jewellery making, particularly rings, necklaces and earrings. Due to its warm and vibrant appearance it can resemble the look of Yellow Topaz. Naturally occuring Citrine crystals are a rare find and some crystals sold and labelled as Citrine are often heat treated Amethyst. The heat treatment process enhances the yellow colouration and is a common practice within the gemstone industry.

Although natural Citrine has been reported found in these locations, it is not common. Most of the Citrine crystals you see on the market is often heat-treated Amethyst. Brazil is the leading producer for Citrine, mostly seen as natural points and clusters or as heat-treated Amethyst. 

 

HOW TO CARE FOR CITRINE

Like many other crystals and gemstones Citrine can be prone to fading when it is exposed to intense light and heat. To ensure your Citrine crystal is kept in optimum condition, it is best to keep it away from direct sunlight and heat. If you intend to use and display Citrine, ensure it is placed in an area away from direct sunlight and heat to minimise exposure. 


Citrine like all Quartz varieties has a hardness of 7 on the MOHS scale. It can be cleaned safely with warm, soapy water. Use a soft brush such as a tooth brush to gently scrub the Citrine, ensuring to take care extra care of any loose, fragile areas. Rinse under warm water to remove any soap residue from your crystal. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth, or alternatively leave to air dry

HOW TO CLEANSE CITRINE

Citrine can be cleansed using a number of different methods. Due to its hardness on the MOHS scale, it can be cleansed using running water. Water is a powerful natural cleanser for crystals, however there are some types which are not suitable for this method, so be sure to thoroughly research before placing crystals in or around water. 


To cleanse your Citrine crystal using water, simply hold under cool running water for approximately 2 minutes, afterwards pat dry or allow it to air dry. 


Alternatively smoke is another quick and simple method for cleansing. To cleanse your crystal safely using incense smoke, simply light the end of your incense stick and allow it to burn for a moment before blowing it out. As the incense smoke disperses into the air, grab your Citrine and slowly waft the crystal through the smoke.
